Arkel Gansey

Categories: ,

Knit your own gansey. With only knit and purl stitches you knit beautiful motifs. This is an Arkel gansey. Stella Ruhe, the author of three books on Dutch ganseys, designed the pattern of his gansy from an old photograph of an Arkel fisherman. With it you can knit this fisherman’s gansey yourself.

Between circa 1875 and 1950 Dutch fishermen wore ganseys with patterns in knit and purl stitches and sometimes cables. The knitters (fisherman’s wives) used blue, natural, gray and black wool. The women from the fishing villages designed and shared their own patterns, so you could often recognize a fisherman’s home village by his gansey.
